Blackberry gelato
This recipe came from Southern Living August 2017. We changed it up some to make it a little quicker and easier. Garnish with fresh blackberries, a sprig of mint and a lemon cookie.
Servings: 8
Cook Time: Prep time: 20 minutes; Total time: 3 hours
Meal Type: Dessert
NC Ingredients: Blackberries, milk
Ingredients
Directions
Step 1
Put the blackberries, ¼ cup sugar and lemon juice in a blender and blend until smooth.
Step 2
Place milk, heavy cream, 1 ½ cup sugar, milk powder, vanilla extract and blackberry mixture in a large saucepan; bring to a low simmer over medium heat until sugar has dissolved. Remove from heat; pour through a fine wire-mesh strainer to remove seeds, pressing gently with a spatula; discard solids. Cool completely, (takes about an hour) or place in the freezer and stir occasionally until chilled (takes 20-30 minutes).
Step 3
Pour mixture into freezer can of a 4 quart ice cream freezer; proceed according to manufacturer’s instructions. Transfer gelato to an airtight freezer safe container and freeze until firm, about 2 hours. Or make in a frozen yogurt-ice cream & sorbet maker.
